📝 Prep English Update 🐧

In English this term, our Prep learners have been busy exploring how to create short, written information texts using both words and images. This is an important early writing skill, helping students to understand how we share knowledge through factual writing.

To make learning fun and engaging, we’ve been focusing on a much-loved topic this fortnight — penguins! The children have been discovering all sorts of interesting facts about these fascinating birds. They've learned where penguins live, what they eat (like fish and krill), and what they do, such as swimming, waddling, and looking after their chicks.

Using this information, students have started to create their own little information texts, complete with drawings or pictures. It’s been wonderful to see their curiosity and creativity shine as they turn their penguin facts into informative texts.

We’re so proud of the progress our young writers are making — they’re becoming confident communicators, one fact at a time!

🚸 Parent Waiting Area Reminder

To help support a calm and focused learning environment, we kindly remind all parents and carers to use the designated Prep covered waiting area before and after school. Waiting near classrooms can be distracting for students as they settle into their day and during learning time. Your cooperation helps us create the best possible environment for all students to thrive. I will provide an update soon about the new Prep gate once this opens as this will provide us more parent waiting areas for before and after school.

Have a great week!

As we move into the cooler months, it has been great to see so many students arriving to school in warm and appropriate winter uniform. A big thank you to our families for ensuring students are wearing maroon jumpers and long pants—it not only keeps our learners warm but also helps maintain our strong sense of school pride and identity.

In Year 1, students have been working hard on their informative texts about animals as part of their English learning. It has been wonderful to see so many students sharing their work from home, showing creativity and thoughtful research. Thank you to all our families for supporting this learning—your involvement at home is a key part of student success.

Our Year 2 students have been diving deep into the wonders of space as they explore the solar system. From fascinating facts about each planet to how they orbit the sun, it’s been a joy to see students so engaged in their English unit. We’re looking forward to seeing their final assessment pieces in the coming weeks and celebrating all the amazing knowledge they’ve gained.

Thank you Year 3 families for supporting our young friends to have the best start to each day. Massive shout out to all the families have been trying so hard to be on time. I see you! We really value your efforts! As the mornings start to get cooler, it can get extra tricky to get out of bed and get ready for school. If you’ve already got a good routine in place, it’s going to make those cold mornings easier.

As we approach our cooler season, now is a great time to start thinking of getting out jumpers and trackpants. Our little learners grow a lot in a year so they may have already outgrown their winter clothes from last year. Please also help us out by labelling all belongings. It can be difficult to keep track of 25 jumpers that all look the same in a classroom! Thank you for your help with this.

Wildlife Incursion

We have our incursion coming up soon where we will experience some animals at school. This is a culminating curriculum activity for us as we have been learning throughout our units all about animals. Our learners have learned many facts about some of the animals they will see and we know this is something that lots of us are looking forward to.

Learning and Engagement

The last couple of weeks have been time for reflection and celebration of learning. Teachers have been able to see how students have progressed and also see what their next steps are. Learners in Year 6 have been engaging with a variety of informative texts that may include technical information and/or content about a wide range of topics of interests or topics being studied in other learning areas. Texts may include reports, media, textbooks, reviews, brochures, biographies and autobiographies. Learners will be picking their own topic to create a written and multimodal informative text for an audience. The engagement blows me away with every learner I see. We all know that when kids are interested in the topic or when they get to choose the topic, we see so much more from them, as long as they stick to facts and not use emotive language with opinions. High expectations + engagement = success in many forms. Learners will also be reading, viewing and comprehending an informative text as part of their assessment. Well done to staff who lift expectations and take students to the next step.

Morning waiting areas

There has been a slight improvement in learners in Years 3-6 moving to their waiting area before school. Please continue to remind your child to go to the 3-6 waiting area as soon as they arrive to school if they are before the bell. This supports safety for all.

Uniforms

I was so impressed that through Year 6 yesterday, ALL learners had the correct school jumper on…..except for two who had their State of Origin jumper on…lucky it was maroon 😉 It is an expectation that our uniform policy is adhered to so that we continue to have high expectations. This includes Interschool Sport where learners are expected to wear Griffin State School sports uniform and NOT their club uniform. They are representing GSS outside of the school. Please support your learner to have the correct items.

Academies Engagement Day

Most of our Year 6 learners attended the Murrumba State Secondary College Academies Engagement Day in Week 5. They trialled their Music, Dance, Engineering, Spanish and Football programs.

The organisation was spot on and the kids had a fantastic time. We will continue to work with MSSC and other high schools to support transitioning our learners to high school to set them up for a successful 2026.

Sports Day information (Athletics carnival) 19th and 20th June

Published by Griffin State School

Parents and Carers,

This email is to notify you about our upcoming Sports Days which will be held in week 9 so that you are able to plan if you were wishing to attend.

Junior Sports Day (P – 2): Friday 20th June from 9am  (participation ribbons will be provided for the sprint events)

Senior Sports Day (Yrs 3-6): Thursday 19th June from 9.10am (place ribbons will be awarded for those who are competing in finals)

Both of these days will be held on our school oval.  A draft schedule of events will be sent home shortly so you can plan what times your child/ren will be participating in various events.  Parents are invited to attend and cheer their children on!  Our P&C will be operating a canteen from down at the oval and our coffee cart will be in operation on both days.  Our Lighthouse Café will be offering Sports Day combo deals for students to order on both days.  More information about what is available to purchase will come home shortly.

All students will need to bring a water bottle and hat.  Learners are encouraged to wear house colours.  Biviano    O’Keefe    Kenny    Baker

Further notes about Senior carnival:

  • High jump and discuss events will be held prior to the carnival day because of the amount of time they take to run and the safety precautions that are required.
  • All students who participate in events will earn participation points for their sports house, along with place getters at the Senior carnival who will also contribute to their team’s collective points.  Years 3 – 6 will have house champions that are calculated and announced on Friday 20th at a Yr 3 – 6 assembly, commencing from 9.15am.
  • Students will be grouped in age groups and will rotate through various events on the day.  Sprint finals will be held separate to the rotations, so that learners can watch and cheer their friends on.  This will be the only event that learners are sitting in tents for.  The majority of the day will be spent rotating through the other activities and events.
  • Due to the large numbers of students at our school, we will be running trials prior to the senior carnival day to determine who will be competing for places and subsequently district representation and who will be contributing for participation points only on the day. This is to ensure we are giving all students an equal opportunity with feedback during their PE lessons, to show what they can do and to allow the senior carnival to run smoothly and on time.
  • What this means is that age groups will be split into competitors and participants, where competitors will be competing for a chance to qualify for districts. Participants will be gaining house points throughout the day in the same events.
  • Qualifying measurements and times for all events are based on the Pine Rivers District Sport Handbook to ensure selections are fair. It is vital that if your child wants to have the opportunity to go to districts, they are attending PE to qualify as a competitor at our Athletics Carnival. If they are unable to attend due to personal reasons, please contact your classroom teacher so they can let the PE staff know.
  • Finals races (sprints) are determined by time, not place in the semi-final.  This means that a learner may have come first in their semi-final, however if their time was slower than the first 3 runners in another heat, then they wouldn’t necessarily make the final.

We will continue to share further details about our Athletics carnival and a program of events will be sent once finalised.  We are looking forward to the carnival this year, with our oval ready to go and new building area finalised.  This means that we are able to have parents on site, watching their children, which is wonderful!

Kind Regards,

Leisa Wood - Principal
